In preparation of the full fiscal court meeting on Sept. 17, the Barren County Transportation Committee discussed future road work to be done on Beechtree Lane.

The first thing that was discussed during the roughly 45 minute meeting was the future work on Beechtree Lane, which is a county road that intersects Roseville Road and Oil Well Road south of Glasgow. Chairman and county Magistrate Tim Coomer presented an estimate on the excavation of the encroaching trees and an estimate on a fence, saying the road had too much traffic for its current state.

“People can tell you stuff, but until you see it firsthand [it doesn’t stick],” Coomer said. “I was out there the other day getting these estimates and I’ve never seen so much traffic. We saw a couple semi [trucks], four dump trucks, I don’t know how many school buses plus 5,000 other cars and stuff. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Coomer recommended the acceptance of Wood Excavating Inc.’s $13,500 bid that would remove the trees and stumps on roughly a quarter mile of Beechtree Lane — likely closer to the Roseville Road side of the lane where the road is narrow. He further recommended the $9,245 bid submitted by Tarry’s Fencing, which would install a fence on that stretch of road.

Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd said they will put shoulders on the road with the eventual goal to widen that section once the county receives money from Frankfort — through the County Priority Projects Program — for paving.

Coomer said the excavation could start by the end of the month with that portion likely to be closed during the day. Both of these will go before the Barren County Fiscal Court on Sept. 17 for all seven magistrate’s approval.

With that discussed the committee members turned their attentions to another county road; namely Mt. Pleasant Road. The road, which runs between Roseville Road and Caney Fork Road, recently underwent a multi-phase repair of its cross tiles. At the time Glasgow/Barren County Emergency Management Director Garland Gilliam said Mt. Pleasant renovations were in anticipation of a “major paving project.”

Before Scotty’s paved the road, Byrd said they were going to move the intersection of Mt. Pleasant Road closer to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.

“The entrance of Mt. Pleasant Road is on top of this hill [where] you can’t see either way so we’re moving it because we’re going to pave it anyway,” Byrd said.

This, likewise, will be discussed during the Sept. 17 court meeting. Byrd confirmed the paving is still on track to be done this fall.
