As Halloween approaches, local law enforcement personnel urge families to prioritize safety while enjoying the festivities.

Both Glasgow’s and Cave City’s trick-or-treat will be 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31.

The Barren County Sheriff’s Office reminds parents and trick-or-treaters of simple precautions to ensure a fun and safe night.

Barren County Chief Deputy Mike Houchens said the key to safety is to “keep an eye on your kids, especially if they’re in a long costume, which could pose a tripping hazard. Just be observant and mindful of your surroundings.”

This attention is crucial, as local areas will see an influx of pedestrian and vehicle traffic. “If you’re in a group, that’s great, but be sure to keep the group tight, and remember to be very careful crossing the street,” Houchens added.

He also advised motorists traveling through popular neighborhoods to slow down, keep a keen eye out for people crossing the road, and remain mindful of any obstacles that could impede visibility, noting the potential need for abrupt stops.

Pre-planning is recommended for those passing through residential areas. Due to the increased traffic, those not participating in the festivities are encouraged to avoid these areas. If that isn’t possible, Houchens advised allocating extra time to move carefully through local lanes.

The Halloween forecast includes a chance of rain, which could further impair visibility — something to keep in mind for anyone planning to be out.

Fortunately, with Halloween landing midweek, deputies expect to be fully staffed for whatever the night may bring. In the event anyone notices any suspicious activities, Houchens encourages them to contact 270-651-5151.

Houchens also advised parents to inspect their children’s candy. “If it looks like it has been opened in any way or tampered with, throw it away.” Drawing on his own experience taking his children trick-or-treating, he said anything that “just didn’t look right” was discarded.
