Much like last year, the Glasgow Public Square will once again be adorned with banners honoring local veterans.

On Sept. 29, 2023 members of the Glasgow Parks and Recreation Department hung 16 banners on light posts around the square with the inaugural banners obtained through a partnership between the Renaissance committee and the local veterans association. Matt Mutter, who first spoke openly about the banners at a Sept. 26 Glasgow Common Council meeting, said the 16 banners had a cost of $1,780 and that subsequent banners who be sponsored “someone who wants to honor a particular veteran.”

At the most recent Coffee and Commerce Glasgow Mayor Henry Royse read out the 17 veterans whose name and image would appear on the banners this year. They include numerous familiar names such as Phillip Gearlds, who is one of the 17 candidates for a seat on the Glasgow Common Council, former Glasgow Mayor Darrell Pickett and Glasgow’s first paid firefighter Kenneth Pace.

According to Mutter, the banners, once taken down from around the square, will be given to the respective families. City Administrator April Russell said the banners should go up by the end of next week.
