A man has been arrested on charges of second-degree arson and first-degree criminal mischief after, according to a uniform citation, intentionally setting fire to a residential garage.

Barren County sheriff’s deputies responded to 3219 Lyon School Road, which is south of Temple Hill, on a call of an “active structure fire.” Deputies located Thomas Houchens, 39, roughly half-a-mile from the residence and, upon being confronted by the deputy, he “dropped everything and immediately placed his hands behind his back.”

According to the citation, Houchens said he started the fire by pouring approximately a gallon of gasoline on some split wood that was in the garage and that he started the fire because he wanted the money for his half of the split wood.

The garage was deemed a total loss and Houchens was taken to the Barren County Detention Center. He currently has a cash bond of $10,000.

Houchens also was on parole for an arson case, according to the citation.
