The Barren County Development Center appears to have one final setback for those looking to relocate their offices to its upper floors.
The Barren County Government purchased the closed U.S. Bank property for $1.1 million in 2023 with the goal of relocating the health department to its first floor and being a virtual one-stop shop on all things development with the Property Valuation Administration’s, the planning and zoning’s and the Barrens Information Technology Systems’ offices occupying its upper floors.
Barren County Magistrate Ronnie Stinson has repeatedly expressed his desire to be done with the building’s renovations — which have been continual since its purchase — by the end of this fiscal year.
That desire is soon to become a reality as Kim Shipley, property valuation administrator, was slated to move into her new office on Nov. 12. On Nov. 8 she said her move would need to wait citing building issues.
Barren County Deputy Judge-Executive Garland Gilliam, who along with the Building and Property Committee, is overseeing much of the building’s renovations said the holdup is “nothing major” and was caused by an elevator issue.
Gilliam said the part, which was ordered through Elevator Solutions, has yet to arrive. When it arrives Gilliam hopes to begin moving offices into the development center as soon as possible — though, he said the PVA needs to move in before the other offices.
In regards to the elevator, Gilliam said he plans to put out an official request for proposals on Nov. 14 to solicit bids on renovating the elevator if for no other reason than to compare prices.
Expenses greater than $5,000 usually go before the Barren County Fiscal Court for approval, though there are certain maintenance expenses that can be approved after the fact due to the repairs immediacy.
