At the brief Barren County Schools Board of Education meeting, the board members heard details on the access road and unanimously approved a nonexclusive lease agreement with the Barren County Fiscal Court for use of baseball fields at Red Cross and Eastern elementaries.

The access road was first discussed at the Sept. 14, 2023 board meeting and it was decided on as a way to decrease school traffic congestion on Trojan Trail. Despite the delays — specifically regarding the U.S. Fish and Wildlife permit — the crews began construction on the unnamed access road on Sept. 6 with the work set to be completed within 100 days.

Anthony Frazier, district director of pupil personnel, said the road is essentially complete, save a few things like lighting and guardrails, and would likely be available for use after Christmas.

Frazier said it is still unclear at this time if the new one-way road will be used for cars or school buses. He said there have been ongoing traffic conversations with a variety of people including Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3 Chief Engineer Joe Plunk.

The five board members also unanimously approved the annual nonexclusive lease agreement with the Barren County Fiscal Court. It is much the same as the agreement that was reevaluated by the county in October of last year. The agreement specifies the county can use the baseball fields at Eastern and Red Cross elementaries from 5 to 9 p.m. for a period of 12 months.

The agreement has yet to go before the fiscal court.

The next Barren County Schools Board of Education meeting is set for Dec. 12.
