Barren County was one of the 12 Kentucky counties that were randomly selected for a post-election audit by the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office.
Helena Chase Birdwell, Barren County clerk, said this audit is nothing new, but is the first time during her tenure as county clerk that Barren County has been chosen. She said she hasn’t been contacted by the state with any specifics, but did know that the audit entails supplying the general’s office with large amounts of data with possible interviews.
“The Attorney General’s Office is committed to ensuring Kentucky’s elections are free, fair and secure,” said Attorney General Russell Coleman. “Through the collaborative efforts of our county clerks, election officials and law enforcement, Kentuckians can rest assured that the integrity of our elections is vigorously protected.”
The 12 counties selected are: Calloway, Jefferson, Daviess, Jessamine, Boyle, Barren, Warren, Campbell, Metcalfe, Edmonson, Lincoln and Trigg.
After completing independent investigations of the 12 counties, the Department of Criminal Investigations and the Attorney General’s Special Prosecutions Unit will present their findings to a grand jury of each audited county.
