A staple of the Glasgow restaurant scene, Garcia’s, is expanding its reach with a new bar section in building next to the restaurant. Officially opening Nov. 29 with the Papa Noel pop-up bar, the expansion is bringing the area a taste of what Christmas looks like in different cultures.

“Garcia’s opened in 2009 and we got this space around two years ago,” said Ale Gómez. “We kept this space for weekends, if you wanted to wait for a table and just have a drink then you could wait there, but then Covid happened and we had to close it.”

As Covid restrictions eased and business grew so too was the restaurant’s demand for space.

“We had seen something like this in Nashville while celebrating a birthday, and we thought we would try it out,” she explained.

After years of work the owners were eager to present the new bar area to the community. Cindy Gómez, Ale’s sister and fellow manager, spoke on what they hope diners will take away from the experience. “We thought that it would be a good date since it is right after Thanksgiving so people will have their family in town, because this will be something great for families to show something new in Glasgow.”

The space is decorated for the season with colorful Christmas decor with touches celebrating Mexican tradition.

“Christmas eve is our big day, it’s customary to dress up, even if we’re just at home,” she explained. “There is dinner, music, dancing and piñatas.” She went on to point out colorful flags hanging from the ceiling of the business, which are an homage to the flags that decorate streets throughout Mexico in the Christmas season. “We also make it a point at midnight to give everyone a hug and a kiss to celebrate.”

The inaugural opening will take place at 5 p.m with festivities ending at 10 p.m.
