No Barren County-based businesses were selected for medical cannabis dispensaries.

Recently the governor had the first of two lotteries for dispensaries and 36 applicants were selected to receive licenses. The lottery was hosted in Louisville at the Kentucky Lottery Corporation.

No business who filed with their anticipated location in Barren County received licenses. Three were awarded to businesses in Bowling Green — AR-MO-KY-MS Cannabis Ventures, PROMO PULSE and FLOWER RADAR — and one was given to a company in Franklin in Simpson County — Zeus Agoraios.

Barren County had four applications for dispensaries out of the 4,075 the office of Medical Cannabis received, each had a nonrefundable application fee of $5,000.

Though Barren County did not get a dispensary, one can still locate in the county if they so chose — assuming, of course, they followed the state’s process of relocating.

Glasgow, the county and Cave City have all opted in to allowing such businesses and because of that the cities have amended the current zoning ordinances to reflect that. According to Kevin Myatt, Joint City-County Planning director, producers, processors and cultivators are allowed in light and heavy industrial zones and highway service districts with cultivators also being allowed in agricultural zones. The safety compliance facilities and dispensaries will be allowed in general business districts and highway service business districts with a conditional use within the office and professional district.

Businesses in Barren County did receive a tier III cultivator and a processor license.

According to the governor’s press release, the second dispensary lottery will be Dec. 16 “and the regions that will be pulled on that date are Region 1: Bluegrass, Region 1: Fayette County only, Region 2: Kentuckiana and Region 2: Jefferson County only.” According to the Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis, there are only 48 dispensary licenses.
