Barren County’s coed cheer team captured second at the state competition last weekend at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester.

Since teams are not separated by school size in the coed division, this runner-up finish was a “huge win for them,” said Barren County coach Drew Bewley Settle. She said a couple of the teams they face every year in this state competition look more like collegiate squads.

“They are tough to beat,” Settle said. “So that was a huge win for us.”

McCracken County won the event with a score of 93.1, followed by Barren County (90.5), Woodford County (89.3), Russell County (89.1) and Graves County (88.9), according to KHSAA’s website. Barren County won the coed state championship in 2016, but has placed third every year since 2019.

“It was truly a great performance for (the cheer team),” Settle said. “Every one of them really gave 110-percent, and they looked absolutely great.”

The Barren County coach said cheerleading “takes a lot of time, dedication and hard work,” and that members of the team have spent the past few months working on their endurance, strength and conditioning.

“We put in a lot of time really working hard on these routines to perfect them for when we go to competitions,” Settle said. “And they were prepared. They looked very prepared.”

She also coaches young cheerleaders on the local Extreme teams as well as the middle school team, which helps feed talent into the high school.

“I coach a lot of these kids from when they’re 5-years-old all the way to 18,” Settle said. “A lot of the kids that are on the team right now, I have had since they were really little. So we have a true bond and this is a very close-knit group to my heart and it definitely makes our high school team better.”
