A $7.6 million makeover for a mile of Columbia Avenue in Glasgow is included in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3 road plan.

District 3 Chief Engineer Joe Plunk said the road plan calls for the segment of U.S. 68 between Front Street and the Glasgow High School entrance to undergo “pavement rehabilitation,” which is a more in-depth process than a repavement. That section of road is named Columbia Avenue in the city’s limits.

With the road being under the purview of the state, Plunk said, the city and county are aware of the expected repair but is largely uninvolved. There are some utility companies that will work with the cabinet to relocate underground utilities, which will be worked on most of 2025 with the actual rehabilitation to begin in 2026 at the soonest.

He added they were finishing up the design phase of the project.

It is because of the bigger price tag that Plunk said it has taken a while to get this road segment in the budget.

Once repairs begin, the concrete will be removed and the road will be paved in asphalt, Plunk said, and it should take no longer than 3 to 4 months, assuming everything goes smoothly.

Work will be done one lane at a time so the road will not be fully closed, though there may be some disruptions to traffic patterns along that section of road.
