For the first time in this 119th legislative session, U.S. Congressman Brett Guthrie presided over the House of Representatives’ Energy and Commerce Committee.
Guthrie represents the second district of Kentucky, which includes Barren County, and was announced to be the chairman of the committee on Dec. 9, 2024. According to the calendar, the meeting was largely organizational.
“The Committee on Energy and Commerce is the oldest standing legislative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives and is vested with the broadest jurisdiction of any congressional authorizing committee,” Guthrie said in his opening remarks. “With this expansive authority and distinguished history comes a significant responsibility. What happens in the People’s House impacts Americans in their homes, and the American people are counting on us to tackle the most pressing issues, delivering results that improve their lives.”
He outlined three priorities of the committee in his brief remarks: securing American energy dominance, enabling technological leadership and — mentioning the committee’s “broad health jurisdiction” — creating a healthier America.
