Until Jan. 24 the public has the opportunity to donate gently used pants, including jeans, sweatpants and leggings, for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Samantha VanCleave said the drive is a service for the kids and also a time-saver. She serves as AmeriCorps literacy tutor and Family Resource and Youth Services assistant with Caverna Independent Schools

“The pants drive is to service our kids at the school in times of need – especially during the day when accidents happen,” VanCleave wrote in an email. “[I]t helps to get the child back into the classroom quicker and decreases that distraction time from learning.”

“We definitely go through pants at the elementary – spilled food/milk during meals, sometimes a child will come in with clothes that aren’t appropriate for the weather or that are too big/too small, and other numerous issues that come up,” she added.

The drop-off location is Caverna Elementary School at 1106 N. Dixie Hwy.

“This is just a small way to give back to our kids, to let them know that we care about them and their well-being,” VanCleave said.

In addition to the drive being a show of care, she said, the drive is part of the corps services in honor of the Civil Rights Leader Martin Luther King Jr.

“He gave so much to the communities he serviced and it’s our calling to serve in his memory,” she wrote. “Part of the FYRSC Corps service on that day is to come up with a donation drive or volunteer service for the community.”
