OBITUARY: Julia ‘Peggy’ Huffman

Julia Margaret “Peggy” Huffman, 86, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 9, 2025. Peggy was born on September 3, 1938, in Mount Vernon, Rockcastle County, Kentucky to the late John Henry McKinley Payne and Dorothy Garnett (Jones) Payne.

After working for a local doctor in Mount Vernon, Peggy moved to Glasgow to attend nursing school, and she was a member of the first graduating class at the Glasgow School for Practical Nurses in 1958. In the same year, Peggy began dating Bobby Huffman and the couple was married on September 20, 1958 in Livingston, Tennessee. That marriage lasted 51 years until Bobby’s death in 2009. During her lifetime, Peggy worked as a nurse, dental assistant, babysitter, and childcare worker until she left public work to take care of her grandchildren and later, great-grandchildren full-time. Peggy was a devout Christian who loved to study the Bible, whistle hymns, and practice unending compassion and kindness to everyone she met. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved to spend time with her family, usually playing cards or marbles, and watching old films.

Peggy is survived by her three children: Bobby Huffman, Jr. (Margaret) of Augusta, Georgia, David Huffman (Penny) of Glasgow, and Lori Webb (Steve) of Glasgow; seven grandchildren: Christopher Huffman (Brittaney) of Griffin, Georgia, Stephen Huffman and Jacob Huffman (Jessie) both of Augusta, Georgia, Brent Huffman (Sabrina) of Glasgow, Lindsay Carver (Christopher) of Smiths Grove, Britney Jackson (T.A.) of Glasgow, and Courtney Flynn (Christopher); ten great-grandchildren; her siblings: Ricky Payne (Lucy), Thelma Kingrey (Paul), and Jeannie Compton (Donald) all of Glasgow, and Hazel Howard of Springfield, Kentucky.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Bobby C. Huffman, and five siblings: Charles Payne, Donny Payne, Wallace Payne, Jimmie Payne, and Linda Delk.

Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2025 at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with a celebration of Peggy’s Life at 2 p.m.
