A hot start set the tone for Barren County in the first game of the Boys’ 15th District Tournament on Tuesday night.
The Trojans hit three 3s in the first six minutes of the first quarter, and jumped to a 17-4 lead over the Allen County-Scottsville Patriots. Barren trailed only the first 38 seconds of the game, but had to hold on down the stretch to win, 50-43.
Barren County faces Glasgow in the title game Friday at 6 p.m. at Barren County High School.
After the Patriots’ Jackson Morris scored in the lane 21 seconds into the game, Kade Hardy drilled a 3-pointer 17 seconds later to give the Trojans the lead for good.
Waylon Clemmons followed with a 3, then Hardy scored in the lane, and Joshua Decker hit a layup before Morris scored again for Allen. The Trojans led 10-4 with 4:45 left in the first quarter.
Brey Bewley followed with a 3-pointer, which triggered a time out from the Patriots.
The game settled in from there and Barren led 20-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Allen outscored Barren 16-9 in the second period, but the Trojans hung onto a 3-point lead, 29-26.
The Patriots closed the third quarter on a 4-0 run, but Barren led 37-32 headed into the final frame.
The Trojans hit enough free throws to lead 42-37 with 3:38 left in the game, but the Patriots had one more run in them.
Morris scored inside with 2:04 left, then put back an offensive rebound with 1:28 on the clock. That left Barren up 1, 42-41.
Hardy hit a jumper 25 seconds later, then Brey Bewley grabbed an Allen County miss, and beat the defense to the other end of the court for a layup that pushed Barren’s lead back to five, 46-41. There was 41 seconds on the clock.
Jackson Reece and Decker closed out the game at the foul line. They each hit a pair of freebies to set the final 7-point advantage, 50-43.
