Barren County Schools Board of Education members approved several bids and a new summer feeding position during their March 13 meeting.

Aside from the two bid renewals on the board’s agenda, the five board members approved a bid for “Barren County High School Baseball Drainage and Upkeep” and a bid for a “Barren County Middle School HVAC unit” through the Kentucky Purchasing Cooperative, which, according to the Kentucky Department of Education, “work…to maximize [district’s] purchasing power, thereby improving their fiscal efficiency.”

The upkeep request received three bids, according to Finance Director Joe Murley, and Glasgow-based CRS Construction was selected for $41,500

“This is to help fix the drainage between the high school [baseball] and softball fields,” Murley said.

The HVAC bid that was approved at the meeting was with Intertech Mechanical Services’ for $84,882. Murley said the middle school HVAC is still working but is so old “it’s hard to get parts” to repair the existing unit.

“It’s not an issue right now, but it just needs to be replaced soon,” Murley said. “The one they have right now is so old it’s discontinued, so even the parts are hard to find.”

Board members also approved summer feeding site supervisors, which Nutrition Director CheyAnne Fant said would entail eight supervisor positions that will oversee the eight summer feeding sites in the district.

“[T]he site supervisor would take the place of one of the workers we would have hired anyway,” Fant said via text message. “If I needed 10 people at a particular school, I would hire one supervisor and nine others.”

She said the interest in the summer feeding program has greatly increased, largely attributed to changes in laws that allow families to pick up the food instead of requiring them to eat meals on site.

Two change orders were also approved with the order associated with a water cooling circuit tabled at Alliance Corporation Board Chair Tommy Gumm’s request and the WKU/BAVEL space usage agreement was approved unanimously.
