Governor Andy Beshear ordered “flags at all state buildings” lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on March 27 in honor of Chaz R. McGowen, who died while on active duty with the United States army in Germany.
McGowan of Casey County died March 8 in Grafenwöhr, Germany, while on assignment with the 2nd Cavalry Regiment. He was 26 years old and a 2018 graduate of Casey County High School. Chaz McGowen was Glasgow Public Works Superintendent Jim McGowen’s second cousin; being the first son of his cousin.
During his tenure in the Army he earned the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon, according to his McKinney-Brown obituary.
A graveside service was scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 27, at Glenwood Cemetery. Full military honors were be provided by the Fort Knox Honor Guard.
