Barren River Lake has hit a record-breaking high in the aftermath of April’s severe weather and is expected to continue to rise.
The Louisville district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported that the man-made lake reached 583.6 mean sea level on April 7, which surpassed the previous record set in March 1989 of 583 mean sea level. Over the past 24 hours, the corps reports an increase of a little under a foot, bringing the April 8 lake level at 584.58 mean sea level.
“Current forecasts estimate that Barren River Lake could reach between 586-587 MSL,” the corps’ press release states. “For context, normal Summer Pool at Barren River Lake is 552 MSL and the Spillway Crest is 590 MSL. We do not anticipate spillway flow.”
The dam at Barren River Lake is “operating as intended,” according to the corps, and there are no safety concerns.
