Unemployment in Barren County dropped two-tenths of a percentage point in the month of February compared to January 2025.

Preliminary numbers from the Kentucky Center for Statistics reports that February’s unemployment is 6.2 percent, compared to the 6.4 percent reported last month. This is the first decrease in unemployment since October 2024, according to the statistics, making Barren County one of the 33 counties where unemployment fell and bucking the increase experienced by 83 Kentucky counties.

In February, the current labor force consisted of 18,435 people and the unemployed number was 1,149, which is am increase to the current labor force of 41 people — being 18,435 compared to 18,394 in January 2025 — and a unemployed decrease of 24 — being 1,149 compared to 1,173 in January 2025.

Kentucky’s county unemployment rates and employment levels are not seasonally adjusted because of small sample sizes.

“Employment statistics undergo sharp fluctuations due to seasonal events such as weather changes, harvests, holidays, and school openings and closings,” the release states. “Seasonal adjustments eliminate these influences and make it easier to observe statistical trends.”

Barren River Area’s unemployment percentage is 5.3 percent and Kentucky’s average is 5.5 percent.

The average for the United States has increased slightly to 4.5 percent.
