Barren County receives $4.2 M grant, plans add-on for technology center

Grants led the April 22 Barren County Board of Education meeting.

Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Scott Harper announced that the district received a School Facility Construction Commission grant of $4.195 million.

With this grant, which will be given in one lump sum, Harper said the plan is to add roughly 5,000 square feet to the existing Barren County Area Technology Center.

Once completed, Harper said that area will be used for classes that are a part of the industrial maintenance; a pathway currently not wholly offered at the district.

Harper added that the board’s approval only recognized the state funding and no construction plans have yet been publicized.

Director of Elementary Instruction Michael Davis also announced the district had been awarded the Kentucky Comprehensive Literacy grant for $1.5 million over 5 years, which equates to $312,000 this school year. Davis added these funds will be used to purchase high-quality resources.

Change orders for the high school’s various construction projects were also discussed. Director of Finances Joe Murley said they still had roughly $400,000 in their contingency fund, and was not worried about the costs.

The change orders approved were:

● Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #059. Cost associated with adding (1) P-8 Elkay drinking fountain (and associated plumbing) in AG hallway. A cost of $5,137.70.
● Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #060. Cost associated with adding GFCI circuit for water cooler in AG hallway. A cost of $1,904.33.
● Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #061. Cost associated with providing new storefront frames at doors 164,165, 166, 167, 168, 169, 200 and 207. A cost of $15,850.00.
● Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #062. Cost associated with providing cast iron pipe and fittings for both dishwasher drain pipes not shown on drawings. A cost of $1,732.21.
● Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #063. Cost associated with moving transformers to the roof of the kitchen. A cost of $6,149.63.
● Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #064. Cost associated with providing labor to modify casework in Art and FMD. A cost of $3,472.41.
● Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #065. Cost associated with providing material to modify casework in Art and FMD. A cost of $4,295.50.
● Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #066. Cost associated with furnishing and installing 4 pitch pockets on roof for roof mounted transformers. A cost of $932.36.
● Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #067. Cost associated with removing door frame and window frame in AG office and installing new door frames in new location. A cost of $1,918.35.
● Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #068. Cost associated with providing a hollow metal door frame for AG office. Moving door from corridor to classroom. A cost of $871.72.
● Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #069. Cost associated with providing labor and material to relocate roof drain in cafeteria not shown in documents. A cost of $2,149.85.
● Kitchen Change Order – Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #070. Cost associated with providing labor and material to complete electrical scope changes outlined on RFP dated 4/2/25. A cost of $18,033.27.
● Kitchen Change Order – Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #071. Cost associated with providing labor and material to install a utility tub in the kitchen laundry room per RFP dated 4/2/25. A cost of $2,842.94.
● Kitchen Change Order – Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #072. Cost associated with providing 5 floor sinks in kitchen slab per RFP dated 4/2/25. A cost of $4,832.03.
● Kitchen Change Order – Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #073. Cost associated with furnishing & installing fire resistant epoxy paint on 12” CMU wall in kitchen per RFP dated 4/2/25. A cost of $2,155.40.
● Kitchen Change Order – Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #074. Cost associated with providing the equipment change in RFP dated 4/2/25. A cost of $72,286.00.
● Kitchen Change Order – Barren County High School Various Projects Change Order #075. Cost associated with providing labor and material for changes in masonry outlined in RFP dated 4/2/25. A cost of $20,634.00.
