Caverna Independent Schools special education teacher and boys’ high school basketball coach Terrence Miles resigned Friday, May 2, after a brief investigation.

A video that sparked the investigation was shared on social media earlier this week.

“Following a thorough review and interviews with all witnesses involved, I met with the teacher this morning to terminate his employment,” District Superintendent Amanda Abell stated in an email to Glasgow News 1. “At the start of the meeting, the teacher submitted his resignation.”

She stated that both students in the video have been “disciplined in accordance with school policy.”

In a letter signed by Miles that was included with the email, Miles said he has enjoyed his time with the school district and apologized for casting a “bad light” on the district.

“There was an incident that occurred a few days ago that was intended solely and totally as horseplay,” the letter states. “Unfortunately, I became a participant in the incident, momentarily forgetting that I was the adult in the room, responsible for overseeing the students instead of playing with them.”

“I sincerely regret my lapse in judgement and believe that it is in the best interest of all concerned that I resign my positions with the district as both teach and basketball coach, effective immediately,” the letter states.

Initially, Abell said the investigation was being handled by “the school district, local law enforcement, and the Department for Community Based Services” and the Miles was “suspended with pay.”

“We sincerely regret that this incident occurred and are committed to ensuring student safety remains our highest priority,” Abell stated in the email.
