Commonwealth Broadcasting wants to thank the Glasgow and Barren County community for its generosity in donating to those impacted by the recent severe weather and tornados.

The donation drive began on Tuesday, May 20, and lasted until Wednesday, May 21, as a collaborative effort between WCLU Radio, Willie 94.1 and NuWay custom portable buildings, which supplied the building that served as the donation receptacle and will also be given as a donation. The donations were for people in London and Laurel County. In his most recent Team Kentucky update, Governor Andy Beshear said the confirmed death toll remains at 19 with 17 of those fatalities coming from Laurel County.

Commonwealth Broadcasting requested items that would benefit not only the people of Laurel County, but also help people involved in the clean up, according to operations manager Todd Steenbergen. Such items as tarps, work gloves, nonperishable food, diapers, medical kits and pet food.

“We asked for items that would help the folks recovering from the tornado and not only that but [for] the ones who are helping work through the rubble,” Steenbergen said. “We are grateful for all the items that were donated and we are amazed by the outpouring in the community.”

Steenbergen said the 8-by-16 building filled up with donations in less than two days.

“Tuesday’s [donations were] hampered a little bit by the rainfall…and the severe weather we had, so the majority of everything that was packed into that building came in one day,” Steenbergen said.

As a physical sign of the community’s generosity, Commonwealth Broadcasting placed a “We are full” sign on the NuWay building because donations were being left in front of the building even after Wednesday.

“It’s quite amazing to see the outpouring from folks who drove up and gave to the cause,” Steenbergen said. “We are amazed and thankful for the generosity of Barren Countians who want to help those that went through the tornado.”

By Wednesday, May 21, the building was filled completely with donations from the community. Michael Crimmins/Glasgow News 1
