Regina Murphy, supervisor of federal programs for Glasgow Independent Schools, was one of 30 Kentucky educators recognized by the Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science for her support of high ability students.
The Gatton Academy Educator Recognition Program was created in 2018 to acknowledge and celebrate the support students receive along their educational journeys, and Gatton graduates were invited to nominate one Kentucky educator to be recognized.
Kate Hans, who recently graduated from Gatton and walked the line with her former classmates at Glasgow High School, chose to recognize Murphy.
“It was an honor to be nominated by Kate,” Murphy said. “Providing students with the skills to accomplish their dreams is the ultimate goal.”
Murphy said going to Gatton Academy was Hans’ goal for a long time.
“When Kate entered Glasgow Middle School, she set up a meeting with the school counselor and myself — GMS principal at the time — to discuss her dream of attending Gatton Academy,” Murphy said. “For the following three years, the staff at GMS acknowledged Kate’s goals and strong work ethic to help her achieve her dream.
“Kate’s hard work, dedication and love for learning guided her in meeting her goal.”
Hans graduated from Gatton Academy in May with an associate degree and Gatton Research and Community Scholar honors.
Community Scholars completed two semesters of research with a research outcome that is presented to a professional audience after being accepted through a vetted process or four semesters of participation in STEM+, and documenting 60 hours of service, according to the academy.
Lynette Breedlove, director of Gatton Academy, said in a press release that “our students are fortunate to have had outstanding educators in their local school districts who advocated for them to have advanced educational experiences.”
“I am grateful,” Breedlove said. “For the dedication to their students these educators have demonstrated.”
