Barren County’s heat advisory is extended until 7 p.m. on June 27, according to the Louisville office of the National Weather Service.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses, according to the service, which also states the heat index for the afternoon of June 27 will exceed 100 degrees “for the 7th consecutive day.”

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the service states. “Take extra precautions when outside[,] wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing [,and t]ry to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.”

“Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke,” the service’s warning reads.

Feeling sick and/or being sick, tiredness, dizziness, headache, excessive sweating, pale skin, cramps and a heat rash are some of the signs of heat exhaustion, according to the National Health Service. Some symptoms of a heat stroke include a high body temperature, flushed skin, headaches, rapid breathing and changes in mental state or behavior, the Mayo Clinic states.

All of Kentucky and most of the eastern United States — from portions of Eastern Texas to Eastern Maine and from Southern Mississippi to parts of Northern Maine — is under heat advisories, and extreme heat warnings along the East Coast.
