Bridge preservation funds top the July 1 Barren County Fiscal Court agenda.

Only seven items appear on the court’s agenda with the majority being financial and personnel actions, however there is a resolution and memorandum of agreement between the fiscal court and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet concerning funds for Matthews Mill Road.

Matthews Mill Road is south of Glasgow and connects Scottsville Road with Tobacco Road. The Barren County Fiscal Court recently received $439,316 as one of the 13 projects approved by the transportation cabinet in its June Bridge Improvement Program.

Governor Andy Beshear said the goal of the funding was to “repair, replace or preserve bridges to improve safety, extend their lifespan and maintain important community links for Kentuckians.”

“Bridges link more than roads; they link Kentuckians to the places that matter most like school, work or health care,” Beshear said. “This program keeps local bridges in a good state of repair so they can remain in service as safe and efficient connections for the families, first responders and businesses that rely on them.”

Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd said the county was one of the first chosen to receive this June funding.

“I’m very thankful for the bridge preservation program and the bridge funds that have been put in place,” Byrd said in her message posted on the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s social media. “We’re so excited to be able to take this money and put it into this project…and increase the longevity of this rural road in Barren County that is highly traveled and has a huge impact on the community.”

In her minute message, Byrd said the funds would be used for bridge painting and bridge deck repair.

Previously, the fiscal court received $751,319 for preservation of the Siddens Road bridge.

The fiscal court meeting will be public either on Zoom or in-person at 9 a.m. in the Barren County Fiscal Court chambers. The full agenda can be viewed here.
