The Budget Reconciliation Bill has passed.
After Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries record-breaking 8-hour-44-minute remarks ardently opposing the Republican’s ‘”big beautiful bill” and Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson vehement support, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to concur with the U.S. Senate’s changes.
A 15-minute voting period began and after the time expired the vote was 218-214, thereby adopting the bill. The vote was mostly along party lines with all 212 Democrats and two Republicans voting against the concurrence. Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie was one of the Republican no votes.
Previously, U.S. Congressman Brett Guthrie, who represents Kentucky’s second congressional district, voiced his full support for the bill, calling the Democrats who feared the bill’s cuts to Medicaid and SNAP as “fearmongers.” Shortly after the House vote, Guthrie released a statement praising the bill’s passage.
“The passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is a victory for the millions of American families who will receive a historic tax cut,” Guthrie said. “As part of this legislation the Committee on Energy and Commerce worked to secure major victories targeting waste, fraud, and abuse in federal spending. The bill strengthens Medicaid for those who need it most, ensures American energy dominance, and supports the rapid innovation of American industry. Thank you to President Trump and all our Committee members who worked tirelessly on this legislation.”
The bill now heads to President Donald Trump’s desk where it is expected to receive his signature. Trump had the self-imposed deadline of July 4.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said the passage of the “big, ugly bill” was a “betrayal.”
“Americans were betrayed with the passage of the ‘big, ugly bill,’ Beshear wrote on social media after the vote. “Jobs will be lost, hospitals will close, rural communities will suffer, living costs will go up and – worst of all – people will die from being thrown off their health coverage. This vote put politics over people, and our country deserves better.”
