Barren County Schools full-time employees will now be eligible for up to 30 days of paid parental leave, for both childbearing and adoptive parents.

Superintendent Amy Irwin said the parental leave for childbearing parents will be for up to 30 days, commencing on the first work day after the birth of the child. For adoptive parents, the new policy would allow up to 30 days per adopted child under four years old.

“It is our pleasure tonight to recommend to the board approval of a district paid leave,” Irwin said during the district’s board of education meeting last Thursday evening.

The board went on to approve this paid leave, with Board Chair Shelly Key Groce commenting that she is very excited about this new policy for district employees.

During his report to the board, Finance Director Joe Murley said they estimate this new policy will cost the school district between $40,000 to $50,000.

In other business, the board approved additional methods of communication to be used by staff, including communication systems used by Western Kentucky University and South Central Kentucky Community and Technical College.

These communication changes are in adherence with Senate Bill 181, a new Kentucky law that restricts district communication between staff members, volunteers and students. The board had previously approved other forms of communication during its June meeting.

Scott Harper, assistant superintendent of instruction for the district, said they have been in contact with area colleges and universities about what forms of communication should be used to adhere with the new state law since some high school students take college courses.
