Committee members unanimously recommended a donation for an economic impact study on the proposed regional sports complex during a special-called Barren County Economic Authority Finance Committee meeting on Aug. 1.
The request comes from Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd and the magistrates of the Barren County Fiscal Court, who approved a $25,000 contract with Sports Facilities Company on June 27 for a feasibility and impact study on the sports complex. The complex is planned for 15 acres of the old Johnson property the city of Glasgow purchased off Cleveland Avenue. At the June 27 fiscal court meeting, Byrd said she hoped to get $5,000 from both the economic authority and Barren County tourism.
Finance committee member Terry Bunnell made the motion to commit the $5,000, but before it was seconded, fellow committee member David Daughdrill said he supported recommending the donation but asked if the discussion in closed session would have any bearing on the decision.
Barren County Economic Authority President and CEO Maureen Carpenter said “it could” so the matter was postponed until after the closed session, which was “for deliberations on the future acquisition or sale of real property…[and] for discussions concerning a specific proposal.”
After the brief closed session, the motion recommending the donation was unanimously approved. Carpenter said the money would come from the authority’s marketing budget. The finance committee’s recommendation will be addressed by the authority’s full board on Aug. 8.
Executive Director with Barren County tourism MacLean Lessenberry said they have not committed the $5,000, but it is going to be addressed in the August meeting.
