A previous version of the story reported that a bid had been approved for a low-water ford on Ritters Mill Road. Barren County Emergency Management Director Garland Gilliam said it is technically a box culvert and treated as a bridge, as such it has been amended.

The topic of the Aug. 5 Barren County Fiscal Court was once again roads.

All seven county magistrates approved both resolutions and agreements with the Kentucky Transportation that provide state funds for various county road projects, and approved three bids for work on the Matthews Mill bridge and road resurfacing, and repairs to the Ritters Mill Road bridge.

Regarding the Matthews Mill Road bridge, Magistrate Tim Coomer, who chairs the county transportation committee, motioned to accept the Intech Contracting’s bid of $477,075 that will completely close the bridge for approximately 45 days. Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd said she supported the closure, noting that they had recieved a $531,975 bid that would only close one lane of the bridge, but for a longer time.

Byrd said these funds come from the bridge preservation monies the county recently received.

On Matthews Mill Road resurfacing, Coomer opted to go with the $119,487.50 bid for roughly a mile “from mile point 4.247 extending southwesterly to Tobacco Road.”

Coomer motioned to accept Bluegrass Concrete’s bid of $281,700 to repair the bridge on Ritters Mill Road. The funds for this repair is coming from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Byrd said.

All bids were unanimously approved by the magistrates.
