UPDATE: The intersection is now open, according to Glasgow Police Department Public Information Officer Terry Flatt.

A broken utility pole has forced the closure of an intersection in downtown Glasgow. The intersection remained closed as of 2 p.m. Thursday.

Glasgow Police Department Public Information Officer Terry Flatt said based on the information he’s received the repair would take between six and eight hours, during which time the intersection of East Main Street and South Broadway Street will be closed to traffic. He said they have barriers in place on all four sides denoting the intersection’s closure.

“We’re probably looking at 6 to 8 hours for the repairs,” Flatt said. “The intersection will be closed until [the utility companies] don’t need us anymore…but we can’t jeopardize anybody’s safety.”

Flatt said there are multiple utility companies on scene to make necessary repairs.

The closure includes the intersection, the East Main Street section coming off of Glasgow’s public square, the intersection of East Washington and Broadway streets, and the East Water Street and Columbia Avenue intersection.

Due to the broken pole Glasgow’s city hall — the Luska J. Twyman Municipal Building — will be closed today, Aug. 7.

Flatt said the pole was hit by a vehicle that drove off and the police “are still trying to find out who.”

Glasgow Electric Plant Board Communication Director Aaron Russell said the repairs are “simple in theory” but will take roughly six hours due to the congestion of lines that need to be moved.

“In theory it’s simple work: it’s take old pole out, put new pole in and move stuff over, but it’s about making sure you do it the right way and making sure you’re safe,” Russell said. “It’s an extensive [repair] because…there’s a lot of stuff on that pole [and] everything down town is so congested because you have so much equipment and lines attached to each of those poles.”

After isolating the outage, the electric plant board states eight customers are without power. Russell said most outages are confined to residential areas on East Main Street, city hall, tourism’s visitor center and the East side of the Square — opposite the side with George Js.

Russell said a new pole has been put up next to the damaged pole and crews are working to move over lines currently.

The Glasgow Electric Plant Board owns the utility pole.
