Park City commissioners convened for a special-called meeting Friday, Oct. 3, to swear in a new mayor. Larry Poteet resigned the position last month.
Commissioner and mayor pro temp Mike Burgess has since been filling the role and was expected to be appointed interim mayor for the remainder of Poteet’s term. However, Burgess opened Friday’s meeting by declining the appointment for “personal reasons.” Commissioner Donna Scavo was the next commissioner with the highest number of votes, according to Burgess. Scavo was sworn in as the new interim mayor for Park City.
Scavo said teamwork and transparency will be prioritized throughout her term.
With Scavo’s appointment came another hurdle for the commission as her seat as commissioner would need to be filled. Two names were up for the commission’s vote, Brittany Hayden and Linda Burgess, Mike Burgess’s wife. Ultimately, Linda Burgess won the seat with three votes as Mike Burgess abstained. Due to a scheduling conflict Linda was unable to be sworn in at Friday evening’s meeting, but is planned to be at the city’s next meeting on Oct. 14, within the 30 days municipalities have to fill vacancies.
With that the commission moved to money, as it weighed paying for a cleaning service at the Park City Lions Club and fire department.
“As many of you know we have cut back on spending,” Mike Burgess said. “We have dropped it way down, and we’ve been looking at things we feel like we could do and do without.” He went on to talk about how those utilizing those spaces should be responsible for the cleanliness of those areas. “We feel like we’re just spending money that doesn’t need to be spent.”
After minimal discussion the commission voted to end its contract with the service.
The commission touted that judicious spending would become somewhat of a theme in the coming days. “Everybody gets to a point where they’re spending too much,” Mike Burgess said. “You got to pull those reigns back a little.”
The commission maintained that the leaner spending would not interfere with the progress of the city, pointing to a groundbreaking ceremony for a $6 million strip mall project being scheduled for later this month.
The Park City Commission is scheduled to meet again on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.
