The Boys and Girls Club of the Caverns has officially gone out to bid, moving the much anticipated project one step closer to being completed.
This was announced at the meeting of the Cave City Council on Monday, Oct. 13, with members eager to hear about the years-long endeavor.
Barren River Area Development District representative Matt Pedigo informed council members that funds had been released to the state before the federal government shutdown. Through the efforts of city employees and Pedigo himself the necessary bureaucratic hurdles were passed, mostly.
The project is currently operating at around $1.1 million, while there is no way to gauge the amount that bids will come in, Pedigo said that should the bids substantially exceed that amount there is a possibility that the project may go out again.
In the notification Pedigo provided, the request states that:
“Cave City is seeking bids for interior and exterior renovations of the future Boys and Girls Club of the Caverns, located at 101 North 1st Street in downtown Cave City. The project involves full renovation of a former 11,000-square-foot Houchens grocery building, including electrical, HVAC, roofing, brick work, and painting, based on plans by RBS Engineering. The project is funded by a Community Development Block Grant and the Boys and Girls Club of Glasgow/Barren County. Davis-Bacon Act wage rules apply, and bids from disadvantaged, women-owned, and minority-owned businesses are encouraged.”
Bids are due by Nov. 4 by 2 p.m. and the bid opening will take place at city hall.
“So, till then let’s all avoid walking under ladders,” Pedigo joked. “Hoping that the bids come back within budget.”
Council members also reviewed a lease agreement for the downtown area, allowing more space for public parking along Broadway Street. The lease agreement is between Atwell Investments, and the city.
The Atwell Investments agree to lease a lot located at 218 Broadway in Cave City, next to the its property, to the city for one dollar per year. The lease’s term is one year and will automatically renew annually unless either party gives 30 days’ notice to terminate. The property may be used by the city for festivals, equipment storage, or other legitimate purposes that do not negatively impact the neighborhood. The city is responsible for cleaning and removing debris from the lot, while the investment group will pay property taxes.
Council members unanimously approved to enter into the agreement.
The council also addressed special-use vehicles. Passed this spring by the Kentucky Senate, county and municipal bodies have been exploring the use of vehicles like ATVs on their streets. Little comment was made on the matter, ultimately resulting in the council voting for city attorney Bobby Richardson to draft an ordinance in favor of the measure to be read at the council’s next meeting.
Park City approved the use of special vehicles on July 8 and the Barren County Fiscal Court held a first reading on an ordinance allowing them during the special-called Oct. 3 meeting.
The council’s next regular scheduled meeting is expected to be held Nov. 10.
