Barren County was recently recognized for its Christmastime transformation of the Downtown Square.
The recognition came through the Beautify the Bluegrass program, an annual initiative that honors community projects that improve public spaces. It is presented by Kentucky Living magazine, Kentucky Electric Cooperatives and the governor’s office.
Local nonprofit Beautify Barren County, whose mission is to “unite residents, businesses, and community leaders…towards the common goal of making lasting improvements to [the county],” led the project, according to the county’s website.
Recognizing the transformation was made possible by the group, volunteers, Glasgow staff and many local businesses, Vice President of Strategic Communications with Kentucky Electric Cooperatives Joe Arnold praised the project as one that “exemplifies the dedication and commitment of individuals and groups who go above and beyond to enhance the commonwealth.”
“These projects not only add to the aesthetic appeal of our towns, cities and natural areas, but also fosters a sense of community pride and unity,” Arnold wrote in a letter addressed to the nonprofit. “Congratulation on your project. Together we can make Kentucky an even more beautiful and welcoming place for all.”
The 2025 winner of Beautify the Bluegrass program was the Loretto Clocktower Plaza Project in Marion County.
