Special-purpose vehicles are now legal on certain Barren County roads.

With no discussion, the Barren County Fiscal Court magistrates unanimously passed an ordinance allowing special-purpose vehicles to be driven on roads within the county during their Oct. 21 meeting. As with all ordinances, two readings are necessary before it goes into effect; the magistrates had a first reading of the ordinance on Oct. 3.

The Kentucky General Assembly passed Senate Bill 63, which allows people to register their special vehicles, like utility terrain vehicles, ATVs and minitrucks with the local county clerk’s offices. However, each municipality needs to pass an ordinance making them street legal within its confines.

“This is already approved through the state for people to go ahead [and register special-purpose vehicles] through Helena [Chase Birdwell’s] office,” Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd said at the special-called Oct. 3 meeting. “This [ordinance] makes it to where if they were to register special-purpose vehicles then they could actually drive them on county roads.”

At an August Administration and Budget Committee meeting, Byrd said the county needed to pass this ordinance because there was a Cave City business that wanted to rent utility terrain vehicle so they could be driven in and around Mammoth Cave National Park.

Park City Commissioners have responded affirmatively to special vehicles, and Cave City moved to have its city attorney draft such an ordinance at its Oct. 13 meeting.

The ordinance is based on a similar Hart County ordinance.

Once the special-purpose vehicles are inspected by the sheriff’s office and registered they become subject to taxes like any other vehicle.

The ordinance, as it was provided to Glasgow News 1, can be read here. Prior special-purpose vehicle reporting can be read here
