Community members gathered Monday evening at Community Partners for Recovery in Glasgow to honor the lives of three teenagers who were killed Friday night in a two-vehicle collision. Two of the teens’ family members attended, joined by the family of Timothy Houchens. His vehicle was the other involved in the collision.

Anchoring the vigil was Rick Smith, a teen recovery coordinator with the recovery center. He led by thanking the Fancher, Corbin and Houchens families for taking the time to join the ceremony. “These kids are the future of our community,” Smith said. “I feel like it is my mission, and the mission of the people here to do our part in preventing future loss.”

Smith then asked the crowd to join him in a moment of silence as he read aloud the names of children who died this year in Kentucky.

Among the names called was Emily Corbin, 18, who died in the Oct. 17 crash at the intersection of Veterans Outer Loop and North Jackson Highway. Her family stood closest to the speakers, identifiable by their plain white shirts with “Corbin 10” written along the backs, a reference to her basketball uniform number. She was a recent graduate of Hart County High School and played on the girls’ basketball team. The other two teenagers killed in the crash were under 18, and have not been officially identified.

Smith had invited Jeremiah Meredith, a youth pastor with Hopewell Baptist Church, to lead the group in prayer.

Originally planned to be a candlelit vigil, wind in the area prevented this, according to Smith. Attendees were instead instructed to use their phone flashlights to represent their solidarity.

No family members spoke at the vigil.
