Glasgow Independent’s board of education approved the purchase of a new school bus for approximately $155,000 during its regular meeting Monday, Oct. 20, at Highland Elementary.

Superintendent Chad Muhlenkamp told Glasgow News 1 on Tuesday that this 52-passenger school bus will be used to transport preschool students.

“It’s still going to be a small enough school bus to meet the needs of preschool with required hand-to-hand pickup and drop-off that we’ve been able to do with our smaller busses,” Muhlenkamp said. “As the preschool has grown, it adds that capacity to be able to pick up more students.”

Muhlenkamp said the preschool currently runs two or three bus routes due to the size of their bus and the number of preschool students, and this new school bus will hopefully allow the district to consolidate that to one preschool bus route.

The board also approved Monday the acceptance of a $5,000 Rising Sun Grant that will benefit Glasgow High School’s new agriculture program and Future Farmers of America chapter.

Muhlenkamp said teacher Mattea Wyatt is doing an outstanding job building the new agriculture program, and he is very excited that the high school is now offering this new pathway to students.

“It’s an opportunity for our students to see things in agriculture in a different light,” Muhlenkamp said. “It’s been neat to see the excitement. There’s a large volume of students that are interested.”

The superintendent said this grant money will help the new ag program purchase FFA gear and some additional materials such as chicken coops to allow students to experience various aspects of agriculture.

In other business, the board recognized two Highland Elementary employees — Jackie Benningfield and Renee Basil — with this month’s Inspiring Greatness award.

Benningfield, who was honored as the certified employee of the month, “has done an outstanding job successfully implementing the MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) framework at Highland Elementary,” and “her dedication has created a strong system of support that ensures every student’s academic and behavioral needs are met through data-driven and collaborative practices.”

Basil, who was recognized as the classified employee of the month, “consistently forms strong, meaningful relationships with students and provides exceptional support that helps them feel valued, confident and motivated to succeed both academically and personally.”
