Austin Tracy Elementary is hosting a Family Literacy Night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. this Thursday, Oct. 30.

Principal Lee Johnson told WCLU Radio earlier this week that this annual event is all about showing families how they can make reading fun. He said literacy is fundamental and that society as a whole benefits from having a “literate populace,” adding that they want to “lay that foundation” at the elementary level.

“When our families see literacy as a priority, that’s going to have a direct impact on what we see in the classroom,” Johnson said.

Bringing up some statistics, Johnson said children who are read to before the age of 5 “are exposed to 1.4 million words,” and “children who are read to at least three times a week are twice as likely to score in the top-25 percent of reading.”

In addition to learning about ways to make reading more enjoyable, Thursday’s event will also include a free meal for families.
