People are advised to stay home during the arctic weather predicted to hit Barren County over the weekend.
Barren County Emergency Management Director Garland Gilliam said the safest thing people can do is to stay off the roads, if possible, as the amount of ice that the county will get is still uncertain at this time. Gilliam said that amount would affect road conditions as well.
Gilliam said he has another conference call scheduled with the National Weather Service on Jan. 23 where he will get more weather information. Currently, the National Weather Service stated Barren County will get precipitation beginning on Saturday lasting until Sunday night with a quarter of an inch of ice forecasted.
“We get the roads cleared on Saturday, it’s liable to keep coming down…and freeze,” Gilliam said. “So little to no leaving the house unless you have to.”
“From an emergency management standpoint, my big concern is the ice because we are right on that cutoff line of ice versus no ice,” he added. “I’m hoping and praying we get more snow and less ice.”
Sometimes getting out is unavoidable. For those instances, Gilliam recommends that a person have extra water, blankets and/or coats, and cell phone batteries at hand in case of an emergency.
Keeping a gas-powered generator outdoors, uncovered and away from the house can help prevent Carbon Monoxide dangers, Gilliam said. He also advised people to guard against burst water pipes during the cold weather either by letting the faucet drip or by using heat tape.
As always, Gilliam urged people to make room for snowplows and to pull the vehicle into a nearby driveway and not off the road as that may lead to getting stuck in snow.
“We want to make sure everyone’s careful and safe,” Gilliam said.
