Barren County’s Republican Party gained nearly 50 new voters in January 2026.
Ahead of the primary election, which is on May 19 and will include the judge-executive, sheriff, jailer, Glasgow City Council, and six-out-of-seven magisterial races, Republican registration increased from 16,986 to 17,035 people between December 2025 and January 2026, according to the state board of elections. With 31,609 registered voters in Barren County, Republicans account for 53.9 percent of the electorate.
Democratic registration decreased by 48 people during the same time frame — decreasing from 11,773 voters to 11,725. This decrease continues the trend of Barren County Democratic decline since the party held the majority in 2019. Democratic registration comprises 37.1 percent of the total registration.
Statewide, Republican registration accounts for 48 percent of the electorate and Democratic registration makes up 41 percent, according to a Secretary of State press release.
Kentucky has closed primaries, meaning a person is required to be affiliated with either the Republican or Democratic Party to vote in the respective primary races. However, since the Glasgow City Council races are nonpartisan, everyone within the city limits will be eligible to vote, according to Barren County Clerk Helena Chase Birdwell.
