Over the years, the Show Choir competition at Beta Club conventions has become one of the most anticipated events. Schools perform big productions featuring their most talented students from their drama, music and choir departments.
This year’s state Beta convention was no exception.
Glasgow High School students stood on stage and started singing “From Now On” from the Broadway musical “The Greatest Showman.” This particular arrangement was penned by Scottie Singer alum Depp Alexander.
Glasgow junior Wilder Pate took center stage as the featured soloist.
“This song has a lot of meaning in it,” Pate said. “I think it’s a very beautiful, beautifully written song.
“I think it brings a lot of energy and a lot of power that fulfills everybody’s hearts hearing it and singing it.”
Pate said this year’s group included many new voices.
“We brought a whole new group, a lot more people — about 20 sophomores and freshmen,” he said. “It was a lot of fun to perform with a new group of people and a lot more people.”
In addition to performing, Pate said this is a great event for camaraderie and inspiration.
“I think it’s good to watch all the other schools perform,” he said, adding that “it’s good to see your competition and to see what everybody else puts in.”
Glasgow and Barren County tied for second in the Show Choir event, according to official results posted on the national Beta website.
“I liked how at the end we all came into claps, and it brought a lot of energy, even to where the crowd even started clapping with us,” Pate said. “I love how it just brought the energy up, and everybody was smiling and on their feet.
“There was always a lot of energy on stage and I can’t wait to see what this group does in the future.”
So the Scotties are heading to nationals once again.
And among them will be Pate.
The Greatest Showman.
