A local nonprofit is bringing a free community program to Barren County this week, focused on sharing real-life stories of addiction and recovery, and breaking down stigma.

The event, called “Voices of Recovery,” is scheduled for March 27 in the Barren County High School auditorium. The event is open to the entire community —  not just those in recovery — with a goal of helping people better understand how addiction affects families, workplaces and neighborhoods, according to Libby Short, executive director of Community Partners for Recovery.

“It’s important just to educate the public and what better way to educate people than hearing real-life stories [from people] who have lived it and have come out on the other side,” Short said. “We also want the community to hear these stories because that just goes a long way in helping break down stigmas.

“The stigmas are extremely important to break down because unfortunately when somebody gets into the recovery phase, a lot of times they have lost everything.”

The program will feature three speakers who plan to discuss their journeys through addiction and into recovery. The keynote speaker is Beverly Vance Aikins — the mother of JD Vance, the U.S. vice president — Bambi Adams with Lake Cumberland Recovery in Mount Vernon and local resident Starr Whitlow, who is expected to share a highly personal story of trauma, addiction and long-term recovery.

In addition to the speakers, the “Voices of Recovery” event will include information booths from local and regional organizations involved in treatment, counseling and support services. Those tables will offer details that may help people seeking help for themselves or a loved one, along with giveaways and door prizes during the evening, according to Short.
