Governor Beshear just announced that tourism in Kentucky generated $12.9 billion in total economic impact in 2022, surpassing the state’s previous record. Glasgow-Barren County Tourism follows suit.
Glasgow and the surrounding Barren County area has historically touted a plethora of tourism activity, with outdoor adventure always being the predominant feature. The economic impact of tourism within the past few years has been record breaking for the area and the newest economic impact data shows that the upward trend will not be stopping anytime soon.
In 2022, tourism in Barren County generated 988 jobs, $26 million in labor income, $10 million in state and local taxes, and $124 million in total visitor spending, with $91 million of that being direct spending. 2022 was a banner year for the local hospitality
industry as impact is the highest it has ever been. Total visitor spending increased by 14% from 2021, which, at the time, broke records.
“I am thrilled to be celebrating a record-breaking year. This exciting news is a testament to the dedicated work of the small business owners, investors, front-line workers, and marketing partners we work with daily across our local hospitality industry and we simply could not be prouder,” said MacLean Lessenberry, Executive Director of the Glasgow-Barren County Tourist & Convention Commission. “Our vision for the future is strong and we look forward to continuing to establish our footprint as a major destination within the Kentucky tourism landscape, and especially in the outdoor adventure sector.”
Tourism industry numbers for the Commonwealth in 2022 exceeded expectations with a total economic impact reaching $12.9 billion, generating 91,668 jobs across Kentucky. The report was produced for the Kentucky Tourism, Arts, & Heritage Cabinet by Tourism Economics, the Kentucky Department of Tourism’s research partner.
