Caverna Independent Schools announced Vonda Stockton as the new elementary school principal Tuesday, Aug. 15.
She is filling this position after Tyler Richardson was promoted to director of student services, a districtwide position.
Stockton said it has been a personal goal since the pandemic shut down the world a few years ago when “the Lord laid on her heart” a desire to work with children in the community where she lived. She said being named principal at Caverna Elementary feels like the “answering of prayers.”
“It means everything to me,” Stockton said. “I have a lot of emotions I’m still processing right now.”
Stockton said she actually applied for the principal position at the same time as Richardson, but COVID-19 prevented her from getting the proper paperwork and certificate needed for the interview.
Stockton also said she applied for the Caverna High School principal position with very limited experience with high school leadership, but nevertheless interviewed so they’d “remember Vonda Stockton” and possibly recommend her if another position should open up. A position at Caverna did open up and Stockton was recommended to be over curriculum at the middle and high schools.
She said she applied for the position along with a handful of other applicants. Stockton was interviewed by nine people who asked her questions about the community and the students in a “round robin” type of questioning.
Stockton said she has no great plans for the coming school year other than “continuing the work Richardson has started.” She did say one of her focuses would likely be on reading skills and comprehension and the overall love of reading.
“It’s important to instill that love of reading at that elementary age,” Stockton said.
“If I had one thing it would be to get books in hands,” She added.
