Glasgow High School, a part of the Glasgow Independent School District, was recently named the 13th best high school in the commonwealth of Kentucky by the U.S. News and World Reports.
The U.S. News and World Report reviews 25,000 public schools nationwide, and 225 Kentucky schools, and ranks them according to various categories. They include graduation rates, Advanced Placement participation and the school’s “college readiness index.”
This year’s report states that GHS has a graduation rate of 96 percent — which is above the state median — and has 567 students currently enrolled with a student teacher ratio of 15 to 1. The AP participation is at 78 percent with 39 percent minority enrollment.
Chad Muhlenkamp, the district’s superintendent, said the high graduation rate and college and career readiness have always been something Glasgow has done well. He said he is pleased to continue that.
“Graduation rate has been something of which we’ve always been very proud,” Muehlenkamp said.
“First and foremost we appreciate the staff and all the handwork that they put in on a daily basis to try and build success for our students and create opportunities [for them],” Muhlenkamp said. “I think this is a true reflection of the effort and energy that they demonstrate daily to provide for opportunities for our students’ future success and continuing that rigor and continuing the tradition of excellence at our schools.”
Out of a possible 100 points, GHS scored 92.61, according to the report. Ranking highest in “college curriculum breadth index rank,” which is “the proportion of seniors who took and passed AP and IB exams in multiple areas.” In this area GHS ranked ninth statewide and 1,361 nationwide, the 1,361 is also the highest nationwide ranking GHS received of the five criteria.
This ranking puts GHS above Louisville-based Ballard High School and public high schools that serve Warren County and Bowling Green while placing the school under several other Louisville and Lexington schools. It also places the school above schools in Elizabethtown, Frankfort and some in Lexington.
In nationwide rankings, GHS placed 1,306 out of the 25,000 schools surveyed, placing them roughly in the 95 percentile.
