The signs are hung from lampposts on the Glasgow Public Square. The schedule of events are dispersed and the clothes for the vintage style show are being fitted. It’s finally here; the week of the Barren County Quasquibicentennial celebration.
The four-day event commemorates the 225th birthday of Barren County, which was established on Dec. 20, 1798, from parts of Warren and Green counties. The celebration is set to commence on Sept. 7 with historical sight tour at 9 a.m. and an hour-long “welcome and opening ceremony” beginning at 5 p.m.
The welcoming and opening ceremony in front of the Barren County Courthouse, will be hosted by local Glaswegian Todd Steenbergen, who has been teaching history at Barren County High School for 30 years. He said in his classroom lessons he focuses on teaching history by “immersing” his students in the historical events and making it real for student. The Quasquibicentennial provides that opportunity.
“It’s a good opportunity for all citizens to immerse themselves in our local history,” Steenbergen said. “Anytime we can take part in events that helps us appreciate our history it gives us a better understanding of it and gives a little pride in where we live, where our ancestors came from and what they did.”
“This upcoming weekend will be a good refresher [of the county’s history] and in some way, regardless of age, we’ll all be learners and be able to learn something new about our county,” he added.
The opening ceremony will feature members of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 20, numerous “Barren County dignitaries,” recognition of the celebration’s planning committee, and guests of honor. The opening ceremony will also include awards given to the oldest man and woman, the oldest church and the longest married couple. As well as an “original song about Barren County” performed by students from all three local high schools, Glasgow, Barren County and Caverna. The ceremony ends with the presentation of the time capsule before cake is served.
After cake, there will be a vintage fashion show at George J’s on the Square.
On Friday, Sept. 8, there will be the Harvest of History from 6 to 8 p.m. It begins at the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center, at 200 W. Water St. Also beginning at 6 p.m. is the Quasquibicentennial parade in Cave City. It begins at the Cave Area Conference Center at 502 Mammoth Cave St. Overlapping the show and the parade by an hour is the Battle of the Bands that begins at 7 at the conference center.
Saturday, Sept. 9, holds a whole host of historical and community oriented events, starting with a free pancake breakfast on the Square in Glasgow at 7 a.m. For non-pancake eater, Park City is hosting the 5K Quasquibicentennial run beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday also offers people the chance to shoot guns, or more specifically, a chance to partake in the “Slowfire Pistol Match” and the “Trap Shoot” on Friday at the Barren River Rod and Gun Club.
The 225th celebration has no shortage of contests, tournaments, games, giveaways and shows, including an antique car show on Friday, a flower show, “Pickin’ and Grinnin’,” the pickleball mixer and the beard an mustache contest on Saturday. There is a variety of Gospel-based events, a community picnic and more gun shooting on Sunday, Sept. 10.
