After a closed session of more than 35 minutes that yielded no action, the project development board overseeing the design and construction of a new justice center for Barren County, didn’t have many items to address, but it there was one necessary.
With all members present, the board members unanimously agreed to a disbursement of $2,900 to Matrix Environmental Group for the hazardous materials survey it conducted on the former Dollar General Store and Glasgow Glass properties that are to be demolished eventually to make way for the justice center along West Main Street.
Tommy Gumm, whose company, Alliance Corp., is handling construction management for the project, said that after he received the survey report he spoke to Matrix representatives and requested the names of three potential companies that could handle the abatement of the materials, such as asbestos, from the buildings, and he then forwarded the survey to those companies requesting proposals from them if they were interested in doing the work. He said he gave them a deadline of Oct. 10 for the proposals to be received, and he was hoping the board could approve one of them at its next regular meeting the following day.
“It’s really a good survey from the standpoint we don’t have very much hazardous material to deal with …,” he said. “I don’t see this removal taking more than a couple of weeks if people are where they can get to it.”
The closed session was for the purpose of discussing the architects’ response to the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Court’s letter regarding increased fees and was the third one in as many meetings related to architects’ contract. At the last meeting, the board members had just received a letter from the architects and the AOC facilities personnel working with the project said the AOC attorneys requested more time to review it before moving forward.
The Oct. 11 meeting is at noon via Zoom streaming service but may also be attended in person in the circuit courtroom on Floor 2 of the Barren County Courthouse. The Zoom information is available through the Barren County judge-executive’s office.
