Hank Royse Field was covered by a clear sky with mild temperatures Sunday, Oct. 22. A perfect atmosphere for football. Families filled the bleachers and looked on as young players warmed up on the field. It was a big day because a former Glasgow Scottie was in town.
The University of Kentucky’s offensive lineman Tanner Bowles was front and center surrounded by children about to play when it was announced he would be donating $1,551 to the Glasgow Athletics Program, which is the youth sports program in Glasgow that offers football.
Bowles had come by his talents through his family with his uncle, father, brother all wore No. 15, Bowles in another example of standing out chose 51. The donation amount was an homage to the families deep roots and passion in the sport.
Nathaniel Goodman, President of GAP, and Bowles had a bit of history. According to Goodman, when Bowles started in youth football, he was a coach for a rival team. As time went on Goodman kept a close eye on Bowles’ career from his time playing for the University of Alabama to his current team at UK.
“We appreciate this donation so much,” said Goodman. “We try to make this program affordable, its $60 to get signed up, which in comparison to similar programs is pretty reasonable.”
The donation will go to necessities like new equipment, but will also go to help youths who may not be able to afford to play.
“We scholarship about a third of our kids, so it can definitely help with that,” Goodman explained. “There’s a lot we can use this donation for though.”
“We’re so, so grateful that people want to come back and still support this program,” he said. “It’s not every day you see a kid from Glasgow go on to play for a university.”
