The four members present at the Caverna Board of Education meeting Thursday, Nov. 9, voted unanimously to enter into a partnership with the Glasgow-Barren County Community Foundation.

Terry Bunnell, president of the foundation, presented during the regular meeting his reasons that the partnership would benefit the Caverna Independent School District and the board members agreed.

“It’s all about keeping the funds in the community,” Bunnell said. “It’s not costing you anything.”

He explained there are those who are friends of the district who would like to donate to a foundation, and have their donation be used for specific purposes. If the district had its own foundation, that would require staffing to manage it. This option allows targeted donations to a foundation that already has the administrative infrastructure in place.

Board chairman Wayne Hatcher said there is a past example of a need for a foundation.

“I can tell you an example that I remember a few years ago, Terry,” he said. “We all remember Greer Atwell… when he passed away, I remember seeing three or four alumni that was asking does Caverna have a foundation that we could donate money to in his honor. There was a lot of graduates that wanted to do something for Greer, but we didn’t have anything.

“This seems like it would be a perfect fit for that.”

“That is a perfect example,” Bunnell said.

Atwell was a long-time employee with Caverna schools who died in 2017.

Bunnell explained the local foundation is an affiliate of the Community Foundation of West Kentucky. The philanthropic organization is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. It also has a $44 million endowment.

The board members present — Hatcher, Gina Lyon, Allison Dennison and Claire Percell — voted in favor of the partnership. Board member Jennifer Ballard was not present for the meeting due to being out of town.

There were student awards presented at the meeting, and a presentation by students who recently attended the Young Women Lead program in Louisville.

Superintendent Amanda Abell Summers told the board members that the district has received another round of funding from the COPS grant, which will be used to upgrade security measures in the district.

The board also approved all consent items without discussion, which included board minutes from the October meeting, superintendent’s travel, fundraisers, and a Pitch In for Baseball and Softball grant proposal.
