The members that make up the Barren County Schools Board of Education, along with the district’s numerous department heads and Superintendent Bo Matthews, are set to convene at their central office on Jan. 11 to discuss a variety of items customary to the start of a new year and to approve a whole slew of agenda items including a land purchase and the access road plans.
Much like the Caverna Independent Schools Board of Education, they will begin the meeting by electing both a chairperson and a vice-chairperson. Currently, the chairperson is Shelly Groce while the vice-chairperson is Mike Miller.
After the elections are concluded Hiseville, Red Cross and Temple Hill Elementaries will give their respective reports and this January meeting features a whole host of recognitions including the student, certified and classified staff of the month, “Alliance for Healthy Generation – America’s Healthiest Schools Awards,” and the three students who won the Congressional App Challenge, who were presented an award by Congressman Brett Guthrie on Jan. 8.
Under the action items section of the agenda is the approval of a variety of construction-related items. The first up for approval is documents and plans for the high school and middle school bus access road — which was originally discussed during the September 2023 meeting and seeks to decrease traffic on Trojan Trail. Related to this road are five items including “Schematic Design Documents, Design Development Documents with DDs, Revised BG-3, Owner’s Engineering Agreement and Construction Manager Agreement.”
There is also BG23-472 that relates to a land purchase of 11.33 acres on Trojan Trail. Heather Gardner, district communications officer for the district, said it is the vacant land next to the middle school. No further information was provided as to possible usage of the acquired land.
Also, in conjunction with the Board of Education meeting the district finance corporation will also hold its meeting.
