Co-owner Dalton Newton is hosting a mental health centered event at Ringside Elite Boxing this Friday, Jan. 26 at 5 p.m.
“I just want people to understand that they’re not alone,” Newton said, “We all deal with battles every day that no one knows about.”
While explaining what sparked the idea of creating an event that’s designed to help others feel less alone, Newton referred to personal experience.
“Boxing saved my life. If this can do that for me, then maybe I can help save other lives,” he said. “There may be people who don’t have the resources to come to the gym, but surely I can do something that’s free. You’re not hitting bags, but you’re working with your mental stuff.”
During the event, attendees will be encouraged to sit down and talk about their lives. Those who don’t want to share, will not be asked to.
“I want to hear all of it. The bad, the good, the ugly. All of it. But I won’t push you,” Newton noted.
If the event goes well, Newton plans to host a “Trust Circle” event on the last Friday of every month.
“My goal is if someone is going through something and they’re thinking about whatever may cross their mind, I want them to say, ‘man I can hold off one more week and talk to Ringside,'” Newton said.
In addition to wanting to make a positive impact on mental health for adults in Barren County, Newton also strives to create a safe and fun space for children to learn about boxing while hanging out with their peers.
“It’s not just adults who go through stuff,” Newton said.
On March 1, the gym is hosting a movie and game night for kids 5 years and up from 6 to 9 p.m.
“I have a staff member who works for child protective services who will be here during the event to help out with the kids,” he said.
